Firm Policies

Please describe your firm's policies for summer associates, associates, and/or other non-partner lawyers regarding employment disputes and workplace misconduct

Sidley is committed to providing all personnel, including summer associates, associates and/or other non-partner lawyers, with a work place that is respectful, professional and free of harassment or other misconduct.  The firm has formal policies against discrimination, harassment, retaliation and other misconduct.  It has had these policies for decades.  These polices exceed legal requirements and are enforced.  The polices define inappropriate behavior, require persons subjected to such behavior or who have witnessed it or reasonably believe it to be occurring to report the behavior.  There are several reporting options and all reports are investigated.  Corrective action is taken as may be warranted and retaliation is prohibited.  These policies are applicable and available to all personnel in our online staff and lawyer manuals.  All firm personnel are required to attend training on these policies annually or biannually.    These policies address discrimination, harassment, and other misconduct; explain the processes for reporting suspected violations; establish prohibitions on retaliation for reports made in good faith; and lay out the corrective actions available.

Please describe any well-being initiatives or programs at your firm

At Sidley, we actively seek to provide a workplace that is conducive to good mental health and well-being, to cultivate a more widespread understanding of mental health issues and how to respond to them, and to provide substantial resources to address those issues when they arise. Our mission is to ensure that everyone at Sidley knows that they can seek help when it is needed—whether for themselves or for a colleague—without fear of stigma or repercussions.

Sidley was an early signatory to the ABA Lawyer Well-Being Pledge, demonstrating our commitment to fostering a culture of well-being at the firm. We hired our first firmwide Director of Well-Being to guide the firm in our efforts to fulfill this commitment, and to lead the development and continued evolution of our well-being initiatives.

Through our Living Well program, we are taking a holistic approach to proactively supporting the personal health and well-being of our lawyers, our staff and their families across four key dimensions: emotional, physical, social and financial. We offer a growing number of resources to help our people prioritize and improve their well-being, including employee assistance program (EAP) and work-life services, wellness coaching, virtual medical and behavioral health visits, free subscriptions to Headspace, free flu shots and health screenings, WW (Weight Watchers) in the Workplace, an ergonomics program, meditation and yoga, and massage therapy appointments. We regularly host webinars, workshops and expert speakers on a variety of well-being topics, including mental health awareness, substance abuse, building resilience, handling stress, mindfulness, nutrition, sleep and more. In addition, work-life benefits like back-up child and elder care, working parent career coaching for lawyers and student loan refinancing help support mental well-being by addressing common stressors.
